Depardieu is auctioning off the contents of a Parisian restaurant – food


The French actor and legendary foodie Gérard Depardieu is putting all the content of one of his Parisian restaurants under a hammer on Thursday.

Depardieu sold La Fontaine Gaillon in central Paris last month and is now putting everything inside – including its cellar containing vintage Château Latour, Côte-Rôtie and Meursault wines up to 6,000 euros ($ 6,700) the bottle – up for auction.

The flamboyant star opened the restaurant serving hearty French classics in 2003 with her then-partner, actress Carole Bouquet and wine mogul Bernard Magrez.

The outspoken Depardieu, who denounced the plans of the previous socialist government to raise taxes on the rich, sold a number of his assets in the French capital, including a mansion, a fishmonger and a delicatessen.

“The adventure is over,” a friend of the actor told AFP.

Depardieu, 70, owner of a few vineyards in his native country, announced his intention to open three restaurants in Russia in 2014, a year after he sparked an uproar by taking Russian nationality.

Rarely out of the headlines, the actor has shot more than 180 films, and has become the face of French cinema through films such as “Cyrano de Bergerac”, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

La Fontaine Gaillon is located in a picturesque square near the theater district of the French capital, and had become a gastronomic rendezvous, warmly criticized by food critics.

“There is always a lot of interest in selling content from top hotels and restaurants,” said David Nordmann and Xavier Dominique of auctioneers Ader, even without the added spice of association with the popular but controversial star.
