Barefoot Countess always starts with the same music, whether Ina Garten bakes a chocolate cake or roasts a chicken. The award-winning cooking show has been on the air for almost 20 years and although the decor has changed – Barefoot Countessis filmed in Garten’s “barn” instead of his house – the music remained the same. Where did the Food Network star get the idea for her now iconic theme song? A hotel in Paris, France.

In an interview with HuffPost Personal in 2018 to promote their eleventh cookbook, Cook like a pro, Garten shared the story behind the Barefoot Countess theme song. She explained that she listened to playlists created by the luxury hotel, Hotel Costes, when creating her show.
Garten liked what she heard and thought something similar would be perfect for Barefoot Countess. She sent the music to the person responsible for writing the theme song and the rest is history.
Here’s what she said to the post:
“I sent the person who wrote the theme song to the music I love and it comes from there,” Garten said. “At the time, and still today, I listened to a series of mixes broadcast by a Parisian hotel called Hotel Costes. The music is Moroccan, it’s American, it’s French – it’s all kinds of different music, and the writer took the feeling of that music and wrote the theme song.
The music on his cooking show isn’t Garten’s only connection to France. She went on a life-changing camping trip with Jeffrey Garten and now has an apartment in Paris.
Almost 20 years since Barefoot Countess created and Garten still listens to the playlists of the Hotel Costes. As part of “Ask Ina” on her Barefoot Contessa – Garten answers questions from fans – the bestselling cookbook author shared that the Hotel Costes is responsible for its cocktail music.
“I love playing Costes La Suite (Hotel Costes Vol.2),” she told a fan when asked for suggestions for creating a “playful” cocktail playlist. “It’s an eclectic mix of genres, but the songs are all fun and upbeat… perfect for [a] cocktail Party! “
Garten also turns to Hotel Costes for vacation playlists.
“I think music is really important to a party – it gets everyone in the holiday spirit the moment they arrive,” she told Williams Sonoma Taste in December 2012. “Love the series of CDs mixed by the French hotel Costes – they are a combination of American, French, Moroccan music and they have a wonderful upbeat energy.
Hosting friends for a cocktail, dinner or brunch, and there’s a good chance Garten will play some music from the Hotel Costes.
