Woman finds € 500,000 in Paris apartment she inherited and gives it to police

What would you do if you found a mysterious suitcase full of € 500,000 in your basement? Rather than keep it, an anonymous Frenchwoman handed it over to the police to determine if it was linked to illegal activity.

The drama began at the end of August when the woman went to inspect an apartment she had inherited from her mother in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the city center. According to Le Parisien newspaper, the woman then went to inspect the cellar that accompanied the apartment.

French apartments in large buildings generally have individual cellar storage space for each tenant. In this case, the door to his unit was locked.

Thinking that another tenant had mistakenly claimed it, she put a sign on the door asking them to contact her. But after receiving no response at the end of September, the woman and her real estate agent called a locksmith to open the door.

Inside, they found a suitcase full of money. The banknotes came in denominations of € 50, € 100 and € 500, according to Agence France Presse.

The woman called the local police who came and took the suitcase. Later, a prosecutor turned the investigation over to a financial crimes unit to see if they could trace the owners of the suitcase and the money. The suspicion is that it may be linked to some sort of money laundering scheme.
